Blood Sugar Monitoring

Understanding Blood Sugar Monitoring: Your Key to Diabetes Management

Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is a vital tool in managing diabetes, enabling you to track your blood sugar levels and make informed decisions about your nutrition and medication.

Why SMBG Matters:
  • Direct Insight into Glycemia: SMBG provides real-time information about your blood sugar levels, allowing you to take immediate actions as needed.
  • Tailoring Nutrition and Medication: By understanding your blood sugar patterns, you can make personalized choices regarding your diet and medications.
  • Individualized Frequency: The frequency of SMBG is unique to each person and may vary based on factors like your insulin therapy, daily activities, and overall health.
When to Check Blood Sugar:
  • Fasting: In the morning before eating.
  • Before Meals and Snacks: To gauge your baseline levels.
  • After Meals: To monitor how your body responds to different foods.
  • At Bedtime: To ensure stable levels during the night.
  • Before Exercise: Especially if you're physically active.
  • When Hypoglycemia is Suspected: If you experience low blood sugar symptoms.
  • After Treating Low Blood Sugar: To confirm your levels return to normal.
  • When Hyperglycemia is Suspected: If you have signs of high blood sugar.
  • Before Critical Tasks: Such as driving, to ensure you're in a safe range.
Frequency Based on Therapy:
  • Intensive Insulin Therapy: Typically requires checking three times a day (before meals and at bedtime).
  • Once Daily Insulin + OHA (Oral Hypoglycemic Agent): Two times a day (before meals and after).
  • Stable Diabetes: For those with stable blood sugar levels, monitoring once or twice a week can be sufficient.
  • All Type 2 Diabetes Patients: On days with sickness or changes in daily activity, SMBG may be needed up to three times a day during illness or travel.
Monitoring Targets:
  • HbA1c: Ideally every 3-6 months, or twice a year if your diabetes is well-controlled on stable therapy.
  • Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) and Postprandial Sugar: Every 2-4 weeks to assess your progress.
  • Capillary Blood Glucose (CBG): Twice a week to estimate trends, but individualized according to your specific needs.

It's important to work with your healthcare team to establish personalized glycemic targets and achieve them within the first 6 months of your diagnosis or initial prescription. SMBG empowers you to take charge of your diabetes management, allowing for better control and improved overall well-being.
